The Mt Baker Banked Slalom is always an awesome event. Its a weekend filled with good times and a place you can always visit to see old friends. People race down the course, others hike for powder lines, and some even manage to do both. I decided to mostly shred hard during the 3 days so I didn’t take that many photos. Sometimes you just gotta ride for fun, even if you are carrying heavy camera gear. I did enjoy filming/photographing the Mt Baker Banked Handplant Competition, a new event for the more freestyle-oriented riders. It was a fun weekend. Thanks to Patrick McCarthy for hosting me and numerous other friends at his cabin in Glacier.

Here’s some video of Carl Lautenbach and Morgan Rose sending it off the Diving Board Cliffs, even though the landing looked pretty sketchy.

Stevens Pass Spring Park Snowboarding

I just edited this Stevens Pass spring park all mountain snowboard park snowboard video. Its from last weekend on April 30th. Watch Colin Spencer and Madison Ellsworth tour the Stevens Pass and meet up with friends like Matt Wainhouse, Kevin Hanson, Dan Reid, Tony Richards, and Travis Cloughton for some hardcore spring shred in Stevens sick springtime setup. Stevens stayed open for some extra days in April and we had to get up to the mountain to enjoy the shred. Its awesome to see the resort stay open longer than I can remember and keep the park in such tip-top shape.

We went to the See Sound Lounge, a club in the neighborhood of Belltown, in Seattle, Washington to film a skit for our new movie “Wildcard TV” on Saturday, April 29th. The skit is going to be called Bro-Pro. More info coming soon.

The Bro-Pro cam is assembled by Kurt Jenson, mastermind of many funny skits.

Retro Fools Day at Stevens Pass

Retro Fools Day is an event where everyone grabs their oldest snowboards, and snow gear to dress up and re-live the good ole days of shredding when neon and one-piece suits were essential. Stevens Pass has been hosting the event for 3 seasons now, and this year was the biggest yet. They had a Chinese Downhill race and this year’s highlight: The Stunt Ditch. The Stunt Ditch was a hand-dug halfpipe just like the original halfpipe contests of yesteryear. You could only qualify for prizes if you were wearing old-school gear and were shredding on an old board, preferably the one you had when you first started shredding. There were some Kemper Snowboards, Old Lib-Techs, Wave Rave, Sims, and more. I missed the Chinese Downhill, and spent my morning lapping the Stevens Terrain Park, which is super sick right now. Then at about 2pm the Stunt Ditch opened and the real fun began. It was a highlight to see people bringing back all types of grabs that would never be considered “legit” by today’s standards, and you received extra props if you even knew what trick was what. Jesse Burtner kept asking people to do a “Jay Grab” and I’m not sure anyone including himself could even remember what is was. Jules, Nate, and the rest of the Stevens Crew did it again, and brought another unique event to the northwest. The good times were had by all, and it was another great weekend on the hill.

Holy Moly 2012

Holy Moly 2012 was a good ole NW quarter pipe session in the tradition of the “Holy Oly” events where Summit at Snoqualmie pushed up a nice transition and allowed the boarders, skiers, and snow skaters to go crazy. Up for grabs was a whole pallet of Olympia Beer.
Some locs showed up and threw down in the excellent all mountain park and the slushy quarter. The weather was amazing and was some of the first legit spring riding sessions I’ve had since last season. Its so much better to ride park when theres slushy landings. It can be a lot stickier, but the springtime is one of my favorite times to ride. Hopefully some of the Washington resorts can stay open late this year and we can keep riding some really fun park features.

Filmed the Mt Baker Cat Gap Today

Today we hit the Mt Baker Cat Gap. The conditions were partly cloudy with some extended bluebird skies. The crew was me, Colin Spencer, Madison Ellsworth, and Langer, a filmer from Minnesota/Breckenridge/Snohomish. Luke Thorington showed up to help build, Carson Artec snapped some photos on his Canon 7d and Nick Ennen came out with his dog Luca to snag a few shots. Highlights were the epic sunlight and Colin Spencer snagged a backside 720 that was a definite solid shot for a video part. It was also a successful photo mission, I was able to grab some shots of the cat gap from a few unexplored angles.

Monday, April 2 was a sick day at Mt Baker. It was a surprise bluebird day so Carl Lautenbach decided he wanted to do some drops near the Mt Baker Beast, an area located out of bounds near the top of chair 8. Carl went to do some drops off of the diving board and I filmed him from across the way with the Panasonic HPX-170 while I left my Canon 5d Mark ii filming in a static angle to show the overall size of the mountain. Carl ended up hiking 4 lines and his friend Darren decided to take a couple lines as well. It pays to go to the mountain regardless of the forecast, because the forecast is hardly right anyway.
